Who this course is for
This series of short courses is provided as a progression opportunity for Hampshire Achieves ESOL learners to gain knowledge about life in the UK and (if applicable) apply for British Citizenship. The course can be attended by non-ESOL learners if they express an interest in finding out more about the UK but targeted at new settlers into the UK and asylum seekers. 

This course aims to develop learners’ confidence to be able to apply for the ‘Life in the UK’ test to increase their first time pass rate, however it will be useful knowledge for all new settlers in the UK. 
Prosp Aims
Each 6-week block will focus upon typical questions included in the Life in the UK Citizenship Test and will include the following four main topics:  
• UK History & the Monarchy 
• British Values, Principles & Citizenship 
• British Customs & Traditions 
• UK Government, Democracy & Laws 

By the end of the course learners will be able to:
• Identify 3 important figures of the British history
• Identify 3 important historical sites of the British history
• Identify 3 important events of the British history and their dates
• Answer 5 test questions correctly.

Please note that there will be no examinations or tests and the British Citizenship Test will not be provided in this course.
Prosp Objectives
This course is suitable where English is your second or other language (ESOL) at Entry 3/ Pre-Intermediate level to Advanced level. It is free for Hampshire residents age 19+ who meet our eligibility / UK residency criteria (residency in the UK for at least 3+ years OR meeting one of our exemptions). Prosp Requirements
Passing the ‘Life in the UK’ Test can lead to more job opportunities and support applications for permanent residency status in the UK. This test is one of the requirements for anyone seeking Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK or naturalisation as a British citizen. It is also a requirement under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002. 

You may also be interested in our other ESOL progression courses (e.g. Driving in the UK, Job-seeking in the UK), some of our sector-based employability courses (‘Working in Childcare & Schools'), or gaining a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in either Maths or English, if you do not already have one. Your tutor will discuss these further progression opportunities during the course.
